We have been growing Corn since 2004. Many farmers had been planting corn for several years before us and we thought we give it a try. We wanted to do something different and became the first Roundup Ready Corn dealer in the area.
We have used DEKALB varieties and have done several variety trials on our farm with different brand name varieties as well. So far we have had the greatest success with the DEKALB varieties. DEKALB has the varieties that produce the greatest yield and mature the earliest; this is important as there is always a risk of early frost in September. The lower heat unit varieties have been so successful in this area that farmers now are harvesting them as grain corn as well as silage corn.
Over the past several years of growing corn we have noticed some diseases and disorders of corn. There are different traits and seed treatments available for these diseases and disorders, when ordering please talk to us about what is available and what is best suited for your needs. If you think you have a problem in your corn during the growing season please give us a call @ (807) 473 5105.

We had many questions when we first started growing corn and we went looking for answers. We talked to the farmers here in Thunder Bay that had grown corn before and we talked the Manitoba Corn growers.
Here in Thunder Bay we have more or less the same climate as some part of Manitoba and we thought it was fitting to ask what they do in Manitoba. The Manitoba Corn Growers has some excellent resources such as the book Corn production in Manitoba. This 67-page booklet tells you everything you need to know about corn production in Manitoba and is an excellent source of information for both veteran corn growers and producers who are looking to diversify. To order a hard copy, call the Manitoba Corn Growers Association at 204-745-6661 or visit the Manitoba agriculture website to find out more about corn in Manitoba.
